Naikan is a Buddhist gratitude practice that asks us to reflect on three questions. This practice re-directs our negativity bias (poor me/ this sucks/ i’ve been wronged/ etc) to the also-true perspective of:
1. What have I received?

2. What have I given?

3. What troubles or difficulties have I caused?

This practice transformed my feelings about residency training 20 years or so ago and I hold it in such high honor and esteem.

Sacrificing ourselves through burnout to the healthcare industrial complex is like attending only to the accelerator while driving hairpin curves in the rain and in the dark. Skill requires proper maintenance of the vehicle, and proper balance with acceleration and brakes. Take it easy. Crashes look like health crises, substance abuse, broken relationships, and suicide. Crashes look like incredibly passionate physicians and other HC professionals leaving the profession prematurely and with deep psychic wounds. Stop the madness. Let’s pair the roads, maintain the vehicles, and adjust our speed to the surroundings.
